Humanized: The Journey Back to You Without Labels by Elaine Mercedes Mendoza
“Humanized: The Journey Back to You Without Labels” is a thematic memoir.
In the context of labels, I share personal stories that are relevant to the concept that labels are currently causing division between us and even within us. As an immigrant, female, Latina and a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve been on the receiving end of prejudice from every angle.
My travel journey hasn’t been “just” about pretty photographs. There was an internal journey as well that I openly share.
After researching and exploring 10 labels, I peel them off like an onion and they are released in a sequence that followed my travels. This book is a guide for introspection in this divided world.
We may not share the same “labels”, but we have all been dehumanized one way or another. We’ve all let certain labels define us as if they determine our worthiness.
From my piece “Criminal of Birth” to my Tedx Talk “The Power of Labels to Change Your Story”, thank you for coming along on this journey with me.
